In 1899, the university was established as the Eastern Institute of higher education which is specialized in oriental studies and training for administrative, commercial, and industrial institutions in the Far East. In 1920, Far Eastern Republic authorities reformed the university into State Far Eastern University during the Russian Civil War until it was closed in the 1930s under Joseph Stalin. In 1956, two after the visit of Nikita Khrushchev in Vladivostok, it is reinstated as Far Eastern State University by the Council of Ministers of the USSR. Its English name was changed to Far Eastern National University in 2000 but the name in Russian remained unchanged and references to the university under its old name were common. The university was reformed again by presidential decree into its current form in 2008 by officially changing the name to Far Eastern Federal University and a new purpose-built campus was planned. The Far Eastern State Technical University (FESTU), Pacific State University of Economics (TSUE) and the Ussuriisk State Pedagogical Institute (USPI), all are merged with the university.
FEFU opened a new campus in the Russky Island area of Vladivostok in 2013 after its buildings hosted the 2012 APEC summit. 41000 students are served by the campus and host the annual Eastern Economic Forum. Also, the university is a participant of the Project 5-100 state program of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
Far Eastern Federal University is a federal institution of higher education that is accredited and funded by the Russian Ministry of Education and FEFU is the oldest, largest, and highest-ranking university in eastern Russia which is established in 1899 during the Russian Empire era, by special order of Tsar Nicholas II. As per the ratings of the Russian Ministry of Education, FEFU is one of the top five Russian universities and has been listed as number two in a recent publication of the top national universities rankings. It is the only university of eastern Russia that is accredited as a scientific university by the Russian Ministry of Industry, Science, and Technology. The university earned this accreditation for its scientific achievements because according to the Science Citation Index, FEFU faculty members contribute 78% publications of all Russian Far East universities and colleges in worldwide peer-reviewed scientific journals.
The university is having joint academic departments with every research institute in natural sciences which is accredited by the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Russian Far East. FEFU won a competition among 90 best Russian Universities for a one-million US dollar grant from the American Civil Research and Development Fund in 1999. Also, the university was able to establish the Research and Educational Center of Marine Biota. FEFU has become a leading scientific and research center of the ecological expertise of Sakhalin oil and gas projects due to its high level of fundamental and applied research.
FEFU is the largest and the oldest non-commercial Internet provider and IT developer in the Russian Far East. Moreover, FEFU was the second in Russia, after Saint Petersburg State University, to use H323 Internet protocol and multi-Mbit/s Internet channels for regular educational video conferences. Also by utilizing Internet video conference technology, FEFU pioneered several educational programs which include Russian and Japanese languages, Russian-American joint credit courses in law, and international dual degree programs in business.
Alumni of the university include 49 of 58 Primorsky Krai Supreme Court Justices, more than 900 of 1,050 members of the Primorsky Krai Bar Association, 70% of the regional scientists holding Ph.D. degrees, 90% of the regional journalists, and almost 100% of the regional specialists in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and oriental studies.

The university is also acting as a national leader in developing relations with Pacific Rim countries, and a major bridge between Russian education and worldwide university society. The university is having 40+ branches which include Russia, the United States, Japan, China, and South Korea. It develops more than 80 partnership projects, including 64 academic exchange programs, with universities in the United States, Japan, China, South Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Thailand, India, and Vietnam.

Universities who are partners of FEFU have unique partnership projects with Ministries in many countries which is joint with Ministries of International Affairs and Ministries of Education in China, South Korea, Japan, India, and Vietnam. FEFU has established various centers which include Center of the Chinese Language, Center of Testing Chinese as a Foreign Language, Educational Center of the Republic of Korea, Japan Center, Chair of Indian Studies at FEFU (jointly with Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Center of the Embassy of India), Vietnamese Cultural Center at Vladivostok, Cultural Center of Germany, Cultural Center of Korea, Cultural Center of India.

  • Admission will be on the basis of the marks obtained in the entrance exam (NEET).
  • NEET Cutoff (2020) - NEET Score must be for General Categories - 147 Marks & For Reserved Categories - 113 Marks

The Scholarship (Quota for international students) includes:
Tuition fee waiver for the whole period of study on the chosen program A monthly allowance in amount depending on the chosen program and your academic performance at FEFU:
  • 1 700 – 9 000 rubles per month for Bachelor and Specialist degree students
  • 3 000 – 9 000 rubles per month for Master degree students
  • 7 500 – 11 500 rubles per month for Ph.D. students

  • Library: - The university has a library with a wide range of books, journals, and periodicals. It has 2 million volumes in Russian, German, English, French, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Czech, Spanish and many other languages dating from the 16th -  21st centuries. Full-text online access is provided to thousands of worldwide journals via 71 national and international e-databases. FEFU was among the first in Russia to have installed the automated library system Virtua (VTLS Corporation). FEFU library is very proud of book collections donated by academician M.N.Tikomirov and many famous researchers and professors of the Russian Far East  A.A. Binevsky, A.P. Derevyanko, N.V. Kocheshkov, G.A. Otaina, L.B. Zus, E.V. Shavkunov, A.K. Popov, and many others.
  • Sports: - The institute has both indoor and outdoor sports facilities on the campus like table tennis, basketball, volleyball, swimming pool, etc.
  • Labs: - The institute has a well-equipped lab on the campus with modern equipment and tools.

Hostel Description

The university has total 5 hostels in the university in which the university is providing well- furnished rooms with all the necessary facilities like a bed, mattress, cafeteria, WIFI Internet facility etc.. All dormitories provide conditions for living, studying and leisure. There are reading rooms, recreation rooms, gyms, sports grounds, a leisure center, Internet access. The territories of the dormitories are protected. - The hostels are available in two and personal suites sharing occupancies in rooms. Students can choose one of them based on their needs, requirement, and budget. Every floor of the each dormitory building has kitchen areas for students' individual cooking with all the required kitchen equipment installed. Besides, the dormitory buildings are equipped with the laundry rooms for students' individual washing. The following accommodation options are available for the FEFU students: double rooms, two-room suites for 3 tenants and two-room suites for 4 tenants.
