Introduction
The history of today's Semmelweis University began more than two hundred and fifty years ago, in 1769, when Mária Terézia added a medical faculty to Nagyszombati University. Not long after, the institution moved to Buda and then to Pest, and development began. The number of departments and clinical beds increased, and by 1838 the overcrowding was so great that the parliament also dealt with the situation of the medical faculty.
Semmelweis University is the leading medical and health higher education institution in Hungary and the Central European region, which is unique in the country as a specialized university. Its three main activities are education, research-innovation and healing; this triple unit makes the more than 250-year-old university an internationally recognized knowledge center.
